On the final week of August, St. Mark’s School of Texas welcomed 863 boys to campus for another year on the Path to Manhood. Even though classes didn’t start until Tuesday, the campus was abuzz on Monday, August 24, with students attending class meetings and orientations, collecting all of their textbooks, and preparing for the new year. Upper School students also attended the annual Summer Reading Seminars. Faculty and staff members from across departments, including the Headmaster and new Associate Headmaster, John Ashton, led discussions on some of their favorite books. This year’s selection was just as varied as always, including classics like The Crucible and Tuesdays with Morrie, as well as recent bestsellers like The Martian and Unbroken. Across campus, students gathered in classrooms for in-depth literary discussion and lively conversation.
On Tuesday, August 25, the school year officially kicked off with Opening Convocation, bringing the entire student body together with the faculty and staff.
“I want to welcome all of you to the new school year,” Board of Trustees President Taylor Wilson ’81 said in his opening address. “I hope you all had a great summer, are feeling refreshed, and ready to get back to school and all of the great things that St. Mark’s has to offer”
He encouraged returning students to engage new Marksmen and welcome them to 10600 Preston Road, recalling his own first day at St. Mark’s. Wilson ended his address by asking the first-grade and the twelfth-grade classes to each give their best lion roar (see video).
Then, Eugene McDermott Headmaster David Dini welcomed students to the new year, stressing the importance of community. David pointed to the example of the Graduate Hall, the newly renovated study hall featuring the names of every graduate in St. Mark’s 109-year history.
“My challenge to each of you this year is to visit the Graduate Hall,” David told students. “Think about the fact that you’re part of a larger community and that we all have a responsibility to make that community better.”
