Marksman Named Texas High School Journalist of the Year
Matthew Conley ’15, editor-in-chief editor of The ReMarker, has been named the 2015 Texas High School Journalist of the Year by the Texas Association of Journalism Educators. Matthew now goes on to represent Texas at the national competition level and will participate in the National Scholastic Press Association’s (NSPA) annual convention in Denver, where the state winners’ portfolios will be evaluated by a national panel and a National High School Journalist of the Year will be named. For his state win, Matthew will receive a $1,500 scholarship later this spring. The national winner receives a $5,000 award.
Entries are judged on leadership, writing, story development and coverage offerings, and visual communications. A panel of three scholastic journalism specialists served on the state judging panel.
Matthew is the third consecutive St. Mark’s journalist to win the state title. Last year, Ryan O’Meara ’14, now a student at Harvard University, was the state winner and placed second in the national competition. In 2013, Daniel Hersh ’13, now a student at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, was named Texas High School Journalist of the Year and placed third in the national competition.
The High School Journalist of the Year program and competition is sponsored by the Journalism Education Association and the NSPA.
