Middle School Quiz Team Places Second in Nation
Over the weekend of May 10, 2014, the Middle School Quiz Bowl Team consisting of eighth graders Rohan Vemu, Abdullah Akbar, and Toussaint Pegues, and seventh grader Connor Pierce finished second at the NAQT Middle School National Championship in Atlanta. After finishing 5-3 in Saturday’s preliminary rounds, the team was ranked 22nd going into Sunday’s double-elimination tournament composed of 46 teams. The St. Mark's team went on to an incredible run of wins, with a victory over #41 St. Mary’s Visitation before scoring five consecutive upsets over #11 North Gwinnett, #6 Paideia, #14 Copley, #15 Trickum, and #13 Winburn. St. Mark's advanced all the way to face the #1 team in the nation, Houston's Harmony School of Excellence, in back-to-back matches. While the team ended their run there, the boys won and lost with grace and great sportsmanship and emerged the #2 ranked middle school team in the United States.
