Students Advance in Physics Olympiad
Victor Zhou ’14 and Raymond Guo ’15 are moving forward as semifinalists for the 2014 U.S. Physics Team, joining 430 other students from around the country. The duo advanced based on their test scores on the rigorous F=ma Test, which included questions like: A 100 kg astronaut carries a launcher loaded with a 10 kg bowling ball; the launcher and the astronaut's spacesuit have negligible mass. The astronaut discovers that ring the launcher results in the ball moving away from her at a relative speed of 50 m=s. What is the impulse delivered to the astronaut when ring the launcher?
From here, students will take the semifinalists exam, from which only 25 finalists will be selected to attend a week-long training camp. Of those, five will be chosen to attend the 2014 International Physics Olympiads in Astana, Kazakhstan this July.
