In the early morning light of August 16, 2013, three buses filled with bleary-eyed Marksmen who spent ten days in the Pecos Wilderness pulled into the St. Mark's parking lot. While the Class of 2017 enjoyed mostly calm weather, the boys spent the first few days enduring thunderstorms and occasional hail. The group also experienced a new set of trails, as recent forest fires forced them away from their usual routes.
A rite of passage for rising freshman, the Pecos Wilderness Trip has been a St. Mark's tradition for more than 40 years. The trip serves as the culmination of the School's Wilderness Program and offers Marksmen a unique education in cooperation and self-reliance. Carrying only the packs on their back, boys are led by faculty and staff members, Upper School student sherpas, and recent graduates along the Pecos River in New Mexico. This year, a record 13 alumni accompanied the boys into the wild.
