Digital Device Trial Policy Announced
As technology becomes an ever-present component in students' lives, St. Mark's administration has amended its Acceptable Use Policy for a trial period. First proposed by members of the student government, the new policy both acknowledges the ubiquity of personal digital devices and teaches responsible use of technology.
Running on a trial basis this year, the new policy allows Upper School students access to their digital devices (iPhones, iPads, laptops, etc), during specific times and in appropriate locations, for educational purposes. Students may check their classes online, visit the Community Service website, schedule meetings and events, and send text messages and emails to parents, teachers, and one another. The policy still prohibits surfing the web, accessing social media sites, playing games, making phone calls, or any other non-academic uses. If the trial period is successful, the new policy may be added to Lion Tracks next year.
The Administration meets with Upper and Middle School students each year to review the Acceptable Use Policy, and this year the new Digital Device Trial was announced to the Upper School. It was stressed that the new policy is meant to teach the boys how to use their digital devices responsibly and continue to foster a community where personal communication is primary and electronic communication is secondary.
