Publications Earn National Acclaim

Twenty students in the journalism program traveled to Philadelphia last week for the National Scholastic Press Association’s Fall Conference. The juniors and seniors participated in conference sessions taught by journalism teachers, as well as professional journalists from all over the country. More than 3,800 students were in attendance, representing all 50 states and eight different countries.

Three St. Mark’s student publications also received national recognition. The 2023-2024 ReMarker newspaper, 2023-2024 Focus magazine and the 2024 issue of The Scientific Marksman all won Pacemakers, an award given to the top student publications in the country that is unofficially known as the “Pulitzer Prize of student journalism.”

At the conference, current ReMarker Editor-in-Chief Hilton Sampson ’25 spoke on a panel alongside other editors-in-chief from other top programs nationwide. Hilton shared insights on managing team dynamics, fostering a collaborative culture, and overcoming challenges in the newsroom.

“The trip was an incredible experience for our staff,” said Hilton. “It offered valuable learning opportunities through workshops and sessions led by experienced journalists and peers, which helped us sharpen our skills and explore new approaches to storytelling and design.”

Additionally, the October 2024 issue of Focus magazine won first place, Best of Show, and the September 2024 issue of The ReMarker won second place, Best of Show, at the conference. The 2024 Marksmen yearbook won eighth place, Best of Show.

Outside of the conference, the students enjoyed their time together in Philadelphia, including running up the stairs to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, more commonly known as The Rocky Steps.

"This trip strengthened our bond as a team," Hilton said. "We connected over shared experiences and built memories that will continue to inspire our work throughout the school year."
