An Insightful Homecoming
With most colleges on winter break, it was the perfect time to welcome young Marksmen back for a visit. Dozens of alumni from the Classes of 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 returned to campus on Thursday, Jan. 4, for College-Age Marksmen Day.
After lunch with classmates and former teachers, the young alumni had the opportunity to attend a panel discussion with established alumni mentors. The mentors shared their experiences with and offered career advice to the younger men.
The mentors included Fadi Constantine ’00, Fry Wernick ’95, David Ortigoza ’97, Ben Hughes ’03, Danny McNamara ’14, Hampton Richards ’95 and Victor Chen ’90.
In the afternoon, several college-age alumni took their turn as mentors, sharing their college experiences with Upper School students. The discussion, led by current seniors, centered on the admission application process, what to expect in the first few years of college and persevering through new challenges.

“I walked onto the track and field team, and I was one of the slowest sprinters,” said Cristian Pereira ’21, a sophomore at Yale University. “But I worked as hard as I could, accepting that I probably wasn’t going to be that fast. A few weeks ago, I ran the 60-meter dash and won the whole meet. My time was top ten all-time for Yale. Progress isn’t linear. Sometimes, you’ll work as hard as you can for a long time and won’t see results from it. But if you keep at it, at some point, sometimes when you least expect it, it’s going to pay off.”
