Hall of Fame Golfer Addresses Alumni
The Alumni Association’s Leadership Speaker Series aims to provide Marksmen with lifelong learning opportunities, hearing from guest speakers in a variety of fields and interests. Each year, Marksmen gather at incredible venues across Dallas to hear from distinguished speakers across diverse fields, from sports and science to business and barbeque.
- The most recent event, March 23, featured Lee Trevino, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of golf. Trevino grew up as a caddy in the Dallas area, and at 17 years old, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps.
- Throughout his service, Trevino continued playing and, upon his return, became an assistant groundskeeper at a local course. His first big success came at the 1967 U.S. Open, where he finished in fifth place and later went on to win the U.S. Open in 1968 and 1971. During his career, Trevino won 29 times on the PGA Tour, including six majors, and became the first player to win the U.S., British and Canadian opens in a single year.
- In 1984, Trevino rallied to win the PGA Championship, his sixth and final major. Trevino was elected to the American Golf Hall of Fame and the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1981 and has designed golf courses in the U.S., Canada, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, Indonesia and Mexico.
- Trevino is the father of six children, including Daniel '11, and has been living in Dallas with his wife Claudia for the last 25 years.
- Speaking of his son’s experience at St. Mark’s, he said: “My children are the first Trevinos to graduate college. The first reason for it is simply because of their mom. And number two, because of the schools that they went to before they got to college.”
