Local Robotics squad takes top in state divisional championships
The Upper School Robotics team members won first place in their division at the B.E.S.T. Robotics State Championship held this past weekend, Dec. 2-3, at the Comerica Center in Frisco. The team also won the “Most Elegant Robot Award” and a special judges award. The Marksmen surprised their competitors — and even themselves — with the first-place finish.
“At the local qualifier tournament three weeks ago, we barely moved on to the state competition, so finishing first was a huge surprise to everyone,” said Stewart Mayer, maker space director and Robotics Team sponsor. “The win is a testament to our boys’ hard work and perseverance.”
Students who participated in the event include seniors Thomas Goglia, Renil Gupta, Will Spencer, James Thomson and Alex Wang; juniors Bennett Alger, William Clarke, Vivek Patel, Baxter Perry-Miller and Arav Rawat; sophomore Aaron Schildkraut; and freshmen William Loftus and Ronen Verma.
The championship capped 11 weeks of working late nights, weekends and during Thanksgiving break for team members.
Faculty sponsors include Fletch Carron and Stewart Meyer. Alum Will Ferenc ‘09, a Principal Hardware Development Engineer at SpaceX, also assisted the students in their preparation.
