Gift Drive inspires support nationwide

As the temperatures drop, a familiar sound is heard once again during morning carpool at St. Mark’s: a senior with a megaphone dressed as Santa Claus imploring his classmates to “Bring gifts to the Gift Drive!”

Before the All-School Christmas Party later this month, the Class of 2023 is on a mission to collect 3,000 gifts to donate to the Salvation Army and help bring holiday joy to children across DFW. While the Gift Drive is nominally a campus event, the generosity of the community has inspired support from the other side of the country.

Diane and John Griggs have relished watching their grandson, John ’30, attend St. Mark’s. While they live in Maryland, the couple make every effort to keep up with their Marksman – even reading the books he is assigned in class – and visit campus as often as possible. When they heard about the School’s annual Gift Drive, Diane and John wanted to help however they could.

“We’re very blessed, so if we can reach out a hand and help someone, we’re first in line,” Diane Griggs said. “We know these gifts are going to reach the children in need.”

The Griggs were so dedicated to the Gift Drive, they filled up two suitcases with dozens of new toys and brought them to Dallas on a recent trip.

“We believe in St. Mark’s,” Dianne said. “We love to see how these boys are growing up. It’s just a wonderful school.”

The Gift Drive runs through Wednesday, Dec. 14, and the results will be announced at the All-School Christmas Party on Friday, Dec. 16. Students will be collecting gifts during morning carpool. You can also show your support by purchasing a Gift Drive beanie in the mornings or at the student store.

“Everyone can relate to the joy of opening a present, and the Gift Drive is a chance to share that joy with children who might otherwise not have that experience,” Student Council president Sal Hussian ’23 said. “I’ve especially loved seeing the community come together. Students, teachers, parents, grandparents – everyone is invested in helping us collect 3,000 gifts!”
