Students conclude successful Clothing Drive

A big yellow clothing bin and the broad smiles of Community Service Board members greeted Marksmen for 12 days last month during the School’s annual clothing drive. In the end, more than 5,700 pounds of clothing were collected and will be distributed to three area non-profit organizations: Fighting Homelessness, North Dallas Shared Ministries and St. Vincent De Paul. 

 

“We chose these beneficiaries in particular because of how they managed our clothing donations,” said Matthias Canon ’23, co-chair for this year’s clothing drive. “These beneficiaries are highly engaged in assisting with the community’s needs. Your clothes are in good hands!”

 

During the last few days of the drive, donations dramatically increased from a total of 700 pounds to 5,700 pounds of clothing, pleasantly surprising the board. Students then helped load bags of donations onto school buses and delivered them to the non-profits. This afforded students the opportunity to see how the organizations not only received the clothing but also organized and distributed it to people in need.

 
“Everyone presented an energy that is so hard to explain superficially, because why would all these people smile at a yellow cart, a bag of clothes and two guys with megaphones?” Canon said. “These volunteers might not be undertaking a labor-intensive task, but their character, spirit and pride in doing so reveal the true colors of us Lions.”
