22 Seniors Named NMSP Semifinalists

The National Merit Scholarship Program has named 22 members of the Class of 2022 as Semifinalists based on each student’s 2020 PSAT/NMSQT scores. This year, of the more than 1.5 million student entrants nationwide, only 16,000 were selected as semifinalists.

“This accolade certainly shows the boys' academic prowess and strong test-taking skills and will definitely benefit them on their applications,” said Phoebe Kingsak, Associate Director of College Counseling. “I think it will build on the seniors’ self-esteem in this ever-fluctuating college admissions process and remind them that they are more than capable on an academic and personal level to apply to the best colleges for them.”

Congratulations to the following seniors named Semifinalists: Arjun Agarwal, Zayn Bhimani, Matthew Fan, Alex Geng, Mikhail Ghosh, Axel Icazbalceta, Abhi Jain, Jedidiah Kim, Adam Lai, Tomek Marczewski, Bryce Nivet, Colin Peck, Sampath Rapuri, Alexander Ryan, Matthew Shen, Pranay Sinkre, Isaac Song, Ekansh Tambe, Adam Wang, Darren Xi, Jonathan Yin, and Jeremy Yu.

“I think that accomplishing something meaningful — whether that is an academic achievement, a sports achievement, or any other extracurricular achievement — is possible for anyone if and only if you continue to demand the best of yourself,” said Abhi Jain ’22. “By setting consistent goals and meeting those goals, you can keep yourself on track for excellence in any field that you enter.”

Additionally, 33 seniors were named National Merit Commended Students: Salman Abbasi, Spencer Burke, Jeffrey Chen, Maxwell Chuang, Sahil Dodda, Enoch Ellis, Benjamin Gravel, Brett Honaker, Tate Laczkowski, Evan Lai, Zachary A Lightfoot, Jackson W Lutz, Zubin Mehta, Blake Molthan, Anashay Monga, Stefan Moreno, Ashvin Nair, Lars Ochs, Raj Papineni, William Pechersky, Thomas Philip, Camden Reeves, Samuel Reitich, Jacob Robinowitz, Henry Schechter, William Shoup, Owen Simon, James Singhal, Zachary Stone, Daniel Uglunts, Soham Verma, Brock Williams, and Samuel Wu.

These academically talented Marksmen have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. Over 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and more than half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
