This fall, the varsity football team will take the field under new leadership. Harry Flaherty will join the faculty as St. Mark’s Head Varsity Football Coach, as well as a teacher of both history and physical education. A D-1 collegiate athlete, Coach Flaherty earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton University, where he was a three-year starter on the football team. After college, he entered the NFL as a free agent, making preseason rosters on both the New Orleans Saints and Dallas Cowboys before earning his law degree from the University of Tennessee. During law school, Coach Flaherty also served as Assistant Tight Ends Coach for the Tennessee football program. Since 2015, he has been at the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey, serving as the Head Football Coach, history teacher, dorm leader, and Associate Dean of Admission.
“Fundamentally, I view the purpose of a coach as teaching life lessons through the avenue of athletics,” said Coach Flaherty. “Be a team, be on time, be a gentleman, be your best regardless of circumstance, block out the scoreboard and focus on the next play, relentlessly pursue continuous improvement, focus on the things within your control, focus on the process over the outcome, and always finish.”
Coach Flaherty will meet with football players later this month before beginning training camp in August. The Lions’ first test of the season will be on August 27, against Fort Worth Country Day.
“Harry has demonstrated outstanding character and leadership in his previous roles, and his coaching and teaching philosophy aligns with the mission of our School,” said Sean Lissemore, Director of Athletics. “He strives to maximize the potential of every student and understands what it takes to have success both in the classroom and on the field. Harry’s exceptional knowledge, experience, and passion for football will make an immediate impact on our program, and we are thrilled that he will be joining us at St. Mark’s.”
Coach Flaherty will be joined in Dallas by his wife Leigh and their eight-month-old daughter Betsy.
