Middle School Honors

On Friday, May 22, St. Mark’s Middle School brought the academic year to a close with its traditional Final Assembly — albeit in a virtual format. Connecting via online video, the faculty and staff gathered virtually with the Classes of 2027, 2026, 2025, and 2024.

 

“Although I am sure we would all prefer to be on campus together, it is still great to see your faces,” said Head of Middle School Dean Clayman. “Boys, know that you are loved, cared for, and appreciated by the faculty of the Middle School and St. Mark’s. Though the format of today’s assembly is different, the purpose remains the same: We are here together to celebrate this school year and rejoice in each other’s company.”

 

Eugene McDermott Headmaster David Dini also joined the virtual assemblies to offer his parting words to the boys: “I want you to remember two words: respect and responsibility. Care for one another, be mindful of the needs of others, and support the growth and development of those around you at all times.”

 

During the assemblies, the Middle School honored several individuals for their accomplishments during the 2019–2020 school year:

 

The Thomas B. Walker III, Class of ’73 Middle School Cup is presented to a young man who has worked hard to attain high academic achievement and has ably represented the school in athletics and fine arts. Because of his good citizenship and character, he has earned the warm respect of his peers and teachers.

 

The Thomas B. Walker III, Class of ’73 Outstanding Scholar Award is presented to an eighth-grade student who has demonstrated superior mastery of his subjects. He is recognized for his inquisitive mind and his dedicated quest for knowledge.

 

The Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Medal is presented each year to an eighth-grade student who has demonstrated the qualities of honor, service, courage, and leadership.

 

The Athlete of the Year Award is presented to an eighth-grade student who has demonstrated outstanding athletic ability in several Middle School sports. Through his high standards of sportsmanship, he has exhibited the positive leadership skills St. Mark’s desires to instill in all of its athletes.

 

Thomas Whitehurst: Because of his keen intellect; in recognition of his grit, perseverance, and fortitude; and by virtue of his desire to further the standards of scholarship, citizenship, and leadership.

 

Peyton Militello: Because of his strong work ethic; in recognition of his athletic and academic prowess; and by virtue of his desire to maintain a healthy balance of academics and athletics.

 

Grayson Redmond: Because of his maturity and open-mindedness; in recognition of his ability to build bridges and foster relationships; and by virtue of his desire to create a sense of belonging for the Class of 2024.

 

The Hunt Silcock Award is presented in memory of Hunt Silcock, a seventh-grade Marksman who passed away in December of 2002. The inscription reads: "The Hunt Silcock Award is presented in memory of Hunt Silcock and in honor of his class, the Class of 2008, to a seventh-grade student who exemplifies the traits of honor and integrity, intellectual enthusiasm and academic excellence, athleticism and sportsmanship, and citizenship and character that Hunt displayed throughout his life."

 

The Path to Manhood Award is given to boys who have made significant contributions to our school in terms of scholarship, attitude, citizenship, integrity, and honor as Marksmen. We call these The Path to Manhood Awards, as symbolized by the statue in front of Centennial Hall. These students have impressed all of their teachers with their strong commitment to academic pursuits, their genuine concern for others, and their dedication to the ideals of courage and honor.
