For the second year in a row, more than two dozen students, teachers, and parents from St. Mark’s spent Martin Luther King Jr. Day helping to clean up the historic Shelton Bear Creek cemetery in Irving. Together with volunteers from across the metroplex, they bagged leaves, repaired fences, placed flags on gravesites, and filled in the dirt where the ground had sunk.
“As Marksmen and citizens of Dallas, it’s important for our boys to give of themselves for a cause that is greater than themselves,” said John Turek, St. Mark’s varsity cross country and track & field coach. Last year, John heard about the cleanup project and rallied Marksmen to help out. “Restoring this cemetery was a way for these boys to uphold Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy by helping others around them.”
More than 200 slaves, former slaves, and their family members are buried at Shelton Bear Creek, many in unmarked graves. The cemetery was awarded a historical marker by the Texas Historical Commission, a state agency for historic preservation.
