Student Diplomats Named Best Delegates
The St. Mark’s Model United Nations team began its year with incredible back-to-back performances. Students made an almost clean sweep of the “Best Delegate” awards at the Dallas Area Model United Nations (DAMUN) conference in Irving over the weekend of October 12. This regional MUN event hosted by Uplift North Hills Academy brought together delegations from schools all over North Texas. Students debated current affairs and simulated high-level international talks on a variety of subjects ranging from free trade restrictions and LGBTQ rights to Somali Pirates.
Five Marksmen received a Best Delegate award, including Alex Loftus ’20 (as Dick Cheney in a Bush Cabinet Crisis simulation), Max Palys ’21 (as France in the Security Council), Pranay Sinkre ’22 (as Afghanistan in the General Assembly), Antonio Quinones ’21 (as France in the Economic and Social Council), and Isaac Song ’22 (as Algeria in the Arab League). Jackson Singhal ’20 (as France in a 1950s Historical Security Council Simulation) won a Distinguished Delegate award.
“Model UN is a great way for boys to learn about current events and develop an awareness of and empathy for societies and cultures that are not their own,” said David Fisher, History and Social Sciences Department Chair and sponsor of St. Mark’s Model UN Club. “Through MUN, our boys learn to become better-informed students, more empathetic human beings, and more responsible global citizens."
Over the weekend of October 5, St. Mark’s MUN began the year at the inaugural Greenhill Model UN Conference. For their outstanding performance, Ned Tagtmeier ’21, Aaryan Puri ’21, and Michael Anderson ’21 were given certificates of achievement.

The club’s next major MUN conference will be at the University of North Texas where delegates will be representing the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Palestine, and Sudan in a Model Arab League (MAL) event. After that, 14 club members travel to Massachusetts in January 2020, to participate in the Harvard Model United Nations.
