Alumni Mentor Across Generations

With most colleges on winter break, it was the perfect time to welcome young Marksmen back for a visit. Approximately 100 alumni from the Classes of 2021-2024 returned to campus on Wednesday, January 8, for College-Age Marksmen Day.

After lunch with classmates and former teachers, the young alumni had the opportunity to attend a panel discussion with established alumni mentors. The mentors shared their experiences and offered career advice to the younger men. The mentors included Dr. Michael Todora ’89, Leo Bernstein ’90, Dr. Hampton Richards ’95, David Ortigoza ’97, Ben Hughes ’03, Nick Cassavechia ’04, Nick Monier ’04, William Hicks ’10, and Danny McNamara ’14.

“Keep your options open,” said Dr. Richards, whose career evolved from practicing medicine to operating a medical laboratory business. “The training that you get here at St. Mark’s is going to lead to a lot of opportunity in the future.”

Bernstein shared advice from his own experience working in the real estate business and then starting a software company: “My time at St. Mark’s and my early professional career taught me you really can’t learn when you’re speaking; you have to listen, and you can’t let your ego get in the way.”

The panel discussion was organized by the Alumni Board’s Mentoring & Networking Committee, chaired by Cassavechia.

In the afternoon, several college-age alumni took their turn as mentors, sharing their collegiate perspective with members of the Student Alumni Association. The panel included Daniel Sanchez ’21, Ekansh Tambe ’22, Sal Hussain ’23, and Noah Cathey ’24.

The discussion, led by members of the Class of 2025, centered on the admission application process, what to expect in the first few years of college and persevering through new challenges.

“St. Mark’s absolutely prepares for college academically,” said Sanchez. “You also get a lot more freedom in college, and it’s really up to you to balance your work and free time and figure out how to structure your days. But again, St. Mark’s teaches a lot of time management skills that you’ll use.”
