SOCCER
The varsity soccer team opened up their counter season play with a couple of tough losses last week. On Tuesday, they faced the Cistercian Hawks, a team known for its stingy defense. Unfortunately, the Lions went down early in the match when a foul in their defensive third allowed the Hawks to serve a ball to the back post, which was nodded into the net. On their heels a bit, the Lions gave up several more scoring chances, which were thwarted by key interventions from senior defender Ethan Zhang and goalkeeper Adithya Munshi. Slowly, the Lions recovered the initiative and looked strong coming out of the halftime break. However, a quick Hawks counterattack resulted in a foul and a penalty kick against the Lions, which left them down 0-2. After that, the field tilted for the Lions, who pounded the Hawks with attacks. They finally crashed through with a goal from senior captain Alden Reagins in the 65th minute. However, the Lions could not secure the equalizer in a frantic final few minutes. The Lions experienced another setback on Friday, falling 1-3 to Greenhill. The Hornets struck first on a counterattack in just the third minute. However, the Lions came back just five minutes later with a set piece goal banged in by David Dickson. The match went back and forth for most of the half, with Greenhill content to sit in a mid-block and frustrate the St. Mark’s build-up. It paid off for the Hornets a few minutes before the break when they took advantage of a miscommunication in the Lion’s defense. St. Mark’s created a few good opportunities in the future but could not find the back of the net. Toward the end of the period, with the Lions playing in their opponents end of the field with numbers, they eventually gave up the insurance goal on another counterattack.  This week, the Lions host Trinity Valley on Wednesday and travel to Ft. Worth Country Day on Friday.

BASKETBALL
The St. Mark’s varsity basketball team competed in three games last week. First, on Tuesday, Jan. 14, the squad traveled to Cistercian for the first SPC counter game of the season. Senior Luke Laczkowski was on fire early and often, notching 27 points in less than 20 minutes of playing time. Junior Spencer Hopkin reached double figures, and classmate Andy Li sank three triples as the Lions pulled away for a convincing victory. Three days later, SM hosted Greenhill. A packed house was on hand to see a repeat of last year’s dramatic matchup, and both teams showed out again this time around. Senior Lawrence Gardner had 8 first-half points, but the team trailed by double-digits early in the second half. However, sophomore Asher Collins hammered home a couple of dunks during a third-quarter surge, and Dawson Battie’s 25-point double-double sealed the deal, as the Marksmen won 59-51. The next morning, the Lions maintained their momentum against DASCHE. Seniors Jack Baker (7 points), Henry Estes (8 points), and Matthew Jordan (10 points) led a balanced attack in which 5 players reached double figures. Junior Pranav Danda had 14 points to go along with several assists as the boys in navy and gold cruised to an 87-51 victory. This week, the team will play the first game in the beautiful, brand-new Zierk Athletic Center on Wednesday at 7:30 pm against Trinity Valley and then travel to Ft. Worth Country Day on Friday.
