The St. Mark’s Athletic Department recognized Marksmen who competed for the Lions this year and are now headed on to play collegiate sports at a ceremony on Thursday, May 11, 2023, in the W. W. Browning, Jr., Great Hall. The Headmaster and Athletic Director made opening remarks, and then the St. Mark’s coaches recognized each of the boys they had guided during their careers competing as a Lion. The ceremony capped off an important week for St. Mark’s athletics, occurring just 48 hours after the School broke ground on the new Marksman Athletic Complex, which is scheduled to open at the end of 2024.
Athletic Director Sean Lissemore noted the contributions of St. Mark’s coaches, support staff, parents and boys and commended the seniors on their athletic careers.
“These well-rounded student-athletes represent what is possible through hard work, passion and a steadfast commitment to their respective sports and have earned the privileged opportunity to participate in athletics at the next level,” Lissemore said. “More importantly, they serve as a shining example to our younger Marksmen of how to compete with character, integrity and sportsmanship. We are so proud of their many impactful contributions to St. Mark’s and look forward to watching them excel as collegiate student-athletes in the years ahead.”
Eugene McDermott Headmaster David Dini noted the impact of St. Mark’s student-athletes and thanked the boys for routinely demonstrating not just skill, determination and resilience but, more importantly, exhibiting good sportsmanship in both victory and defeat, saying, “Mrs. Dini and I routinely talk about how grateful and proud we are of the way you conduct yourselves, on and off the field. Thank you for representing our school so well, always living out the values and ideals that we cherish.”
St. Mark’s fields 45 teams across 16 sports and has been awarded the Southwest Preparatory Conference Athletic Directors Cup as the winningest boys’ athletics program in 13 of the past 16 while being the runner-up honors in the other three years.
Congratulations to all our Marksmen student-athletes this year, and, in particular, those boys who will continue their athletic pursuits in college.
