Wrestling The varsity wrestling team opened the season at the Hillcrest High School Panther Invitational this past weekend. Twenty teams from the following school districts were in attendance: Dallas, Frisco, Carrolton-Farmers Branch, Prosper, Lewisville, Little Elm, North Richland Hills and Richardson. St. Mark’s finished sixth place and had five medalists: Quina Perkison (3rd), Teddy Fleiss (3rd), Wyatt Loehr (3rd), Stice Neuhoff (2nd) and Hayward Metcalf (1st). St. Mark’s wrestling enters the 13th Annual Heath Invitational at Rockwall-Heath High School on November 18-19. The Lions look to best the eighth-place team finish from last year’s tournament in this tough competition.
Soccer The varsity soccer team began their 2022-2023 campaign in excellent form by besting Brighter Horizons Academy by a score of 7-1. Within the first ten minutes, junior John Ma opened the scoring from a corner kick after a clever exchange with sophomore Alden Reagins. Reagins then converted a penalty kick in the fourteenth minute, and the Lions were off and running. Reagins turned provider again when his pass found its way to junior Alex Soliz, who coolly found the back of the net. Senior captain Nat Fisher combined with sophomore Aiden Sumer to set up junior Reed Sussman, and St. Mark’s led by four goals just after the midway point of the first half. An unassisted goal from sophomore Vikram Singhand a goal from junior Sharang Vyas that was set up by junior Temi Balogun completed the first-half scoring. Junior goalkeeper Tyler Tang kept a clean sheet for the first half and was replaced by sophomore Adithya Munshi at halftime. Compliments of Sumer, Reagins scored in the opening minutes of the second half to record his second goal along with his two assists. Brighter Horizons Academy converted a penalty kick late in the match to spoil the Lions’ shutout bid. The next day, a late morning kickoff saw St. Andrew’s from Austin and St. Mark’s play to a scoreless draw. Both teams were missing key players, which affected the strategy and flow of the match. While the Lions dominated possession, a great deal of the possession was in their own half, as St. Andrew’s was content to defend in their own half of the field. Senior captain Nat Fisher was called upon to play goalkeeper and delivered a shutout, with St. Andrew’s producing minimal scoring chances. The Lions' best two chances were thwarted by excellent goalkeeping and the St. Andrew’s defense consistently stiffened in the final third to preserve a clean sheet. The match proved to be a valuable learning experience for several of the new varsity players as well as six junior varsity players who were called up to play: sophomores Will Clifford, Nicholas Dickason, Oliver Peck, Daniel Sun, Dylan Taylor and freshman Kazim Hussain. The Lions host three home games this week: Prestonwood on Monday and Covenant on Tuesday and Nolan Catholic on Friday.
Basketball This past weekend, the varsity basketball team launched their seasons with two very competitive games. On Friday, DasCHE, a final-four representative at the home school national tournament last year, visited Spencer Gym. The score seesawed back and forth, with Rapha Mitterer-Claudette knocking down early 3’s to spur the Marksmen’s first-half scoring attack. Late in the third quarter, St. Mark’s made a run, thanks in large part to 18 second-half points from Luke Laczkowski and built a double-digit lead that resulted in a victorious start to the season. On Saturday, the Lions continued their hot streak, jumping out to a 13-0 lead against Crandall High School at the Jimmy Gales Invitational held at Dallas Carter High School. Unfortunately, all the momentum swung the wrong direction in the final three quarters, as foul trouble and cold shooting doomed the boys in navy and gold. St. Mark’s now sits at 1-1 and is preparing for the Dallas Mavericks Invitational Tournament held in Frisco this weekend.
