The Trident Water Polo 18U boys team, a club water polo team comprised mainly of St. Mark’s students, won a silver medal at the National Junior Olympics (NJO) on July 23, 2019, at Irvine, California. Along with this prestigious honor, the team also earned the designation of being the best 18U boys team in Texas.
After qualifying for NJO from the Southwest Zone in June, the team seeded 17th in the Gold Division nationwide and third overall in Texas. Over the course of four days, the boys played ten games and under the guidance of Head Coach Peter Hudak and Assistant Coach Tim Simenc ’15, defeating several California club teams along the way.
For the final game, a true nail-biter, both teams were tied 11-11. However, with 6.29 seconds left on the clock, the referees awarded the opposition a five meter penalty shot, which proved decisive, and Trident lost 11-12.
