Lions Sports Update (10/21)

FOOTBALL
This past Friday, the Lions’ varsity football team hosted the St. John’s Mavericks in the 74th matchup between the two programs. St. Mark’s supported Breast Cancer Awareness and honored the 25th anniversary of the 1999 undefeated SPC Championship team. St. Mark’s lost to St. John’s 42-62 in a high-scoring affair. The Lions could not slow the Maverick’s high-powered rushing attack but could move the ball offensively. The Lions rushed for 103 yards and threw for 330 yards on the evening. Senior Mateu Parker caught eight passes for 259 yards and three touchdowns, while Jack Baker and Hank Vig hauled in TD receptions. Lawrence Gardner added a rushing score to his five passing touchdowns and commanded the Lions’ attack throughout the evening. The Lions fell to 5-3 and will travel to Episcopal High School in Houston this Friday for a 7:00 pm kickoff.

VOLLEYBALL
The varsity volleyball team hosted two matches this past week.  On Monday, the Dallas One Men’s Club team came to Spencer Gym to face the Lions. Many of St. Mark’s players compete for Dallas One in the off-season, so they are highly motivated to face their friends and club teammates. St. Mark’s started strong and kept the momentum throughout the match, winning 3-0.  On Wednesday, the Trinity Valley Trojans came to town having just defeated the Lions 3-2 the previous week in an SPC NZ counter match.  This time, the Lions were ready and played one of the most dominant matches in recent memory, taking down the Trojans 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-13) and avenging their only SPC NZ counter loss this season.  This week, the Lions host Ft. Worth Country Day on Tuesday and then travel to Austin to play St. Andrew’s and St. Stephen’s.  A win in all three of these matches would lock up the #1 seed in the SPC North Zone for the Lions.

CROSS COUNTRY
The cross country team was off this week and will travel to St. Andrew’s in Austin, TX, this Saturday to compete one more time prior to the SPC Championships.
