Lions Sports Update (10/15)

WATER POLO
Varsity water polo capped off a great season with an impressive win in the TISCA State Championship. This marks the Lion’s 5th straight championship season and an almost perfect season with no losses to Texas teams and two losses total while out in California, the powerhouse for water polo. The final game of the season would be one to remember.  The Lions Team would take on a robust Houston Consolidated team that, in their defense, saw the Lions on the wrong day.  This particular game would be as close to perfect as it has ever been seen in the Coach Calder Era of coaching.  The Lions would jump out to a 9-1 first-quarter lead with junior Oliver Geheb netting 4, senior Leo Scheiner and junior Matthew Liu would add 2 each, and sophomore Max Lee would add 1.  In the second quarter, it was a strong defensive performance, with the Lions holding Houston scoreless while adding 3 additional goals, 2 from senior Reagan Brower and sophomore Tyson Diep would add 1.  In the third quarter, Geheb was at it again, dropping 5 goals, bringing his total up to 9. Liu and Scheiner would also add 1 goal each, while senior Jaden Ouyang would net 2 more goals.  In the final quarter, the all-senior lineup of Scheiner, Nico Costa, and Ouyang would all add goals to their totals. When the subs came in, Geheb would quickly add his 10th and final goal of the game before being subbed soon out to hold this beast off.  Fellow junior Doan Nguyen would add the game’s prettiest goal with a spinner lob (curveball) from the 1 position, ultimately catching the opposing goalie off guard and out of position. In the end, the Lions would defeat Houston Consolidated by a score of 26-1.  Senior goalkeeper Gage Fojtasek would have 13 saves on the day, while junior goalkeeper Andrew Zhang would have 11 in what was one of the most dominant games from all aspects in recent history.

FOOTBALL
Last Thursday, the Lions’ varsity football team traveled to The Woodlands to take on John Cooper in an SPC 4A matchup. The Lions’ defense was outstanding, holding the Dragons to 6 points until late in the fourth quarter. Senior Jack Baker recorded 2 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and a forced fumble. Senior Noah Williams recovered two fumbles, and sophomore Mac Saye delivered a critical interception to set up the Lions’ offense. Senior Henry Estes also recorded 1.5 sacks and 3 additional QB pressures. Offensively, it was a group effort, as five players combined for 100 yards on the ground and seven players combined for 20 catches. Senior Lawrence Gardner threw for 191 yards and two touchdowns, one to senior Mateu Parker and one to Jack Baker, and sophomore David Dickson punched in a rushing touchdown to seal the game. The Lions improved to 5-2 and will host St. John’s this Friday at 7 pm in the 74th matchup between the two schools.

VOLLEYBALL
The varsity volleyball team played two SPC counter matches last week.  On Tuesday, the Lions traveled to Ft. Worth Country Day to face a much improved Falcons squad.  After dropping game 1, the Lions recovered and took the next 3 games to win the match 3-1.  On Thursday, the Lions were back in Ft. Worth to face Trinity Valley.  Much like Tuesday’s match, the Lions dropped game 1 before finding some rhythm and then winning game 2.  Without two starters, the Lion’s depth was tested, and the Trojans would take game 3 before the Lions would even the match at 2-apiece with a game 4 win.  In the deciding game 5, the match was even early when the Lions got stuck in a rotation that allowed the Trojans to take a lead that they would not relinquish. The defeat gave the Lions their first regular season loss in over two years, the previous coming at the hands of the TVS Trojans on Oct. 11, 2022.  St. Mark’s now sits at 4-1 in the SPC North Zone standings and will face the Dallas One Volleyball Club on Monday and then look to avenge last week’s loss when they host Trinity Valley on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 6:30 pm.

CROSS COUNTRY
The varsity cross country team was off last week and is preparing for a trip to Austin, TX, on Oct. 26.
