The Southwest Preparatory Conference recently awarded St. Mark’s its 2019-2020 Athletic Directors’ Cup (Boys). St. Mark’s has received the Directors’ Cup 12 out of the past 14 years. The Directors’ Cup recognizes the athletic programs (boys, girls, and co-coed) that had the most combined success across all of their SPC sports.
“The success of our athletics program was a reflection of the strong resolve and unwavering spirit of our School, and a testament to the outstanding leadership of our coaching staff and senior class,” said Sean Lissemore, St. Mark’s Athletic Director. “Most important, our student-athletes approached all competitions with sportsmanship, respect, and humility regardless of the outcome.”
Due to the ongoing pandemic, the 2019–2020 Directors’ Cup was awarded based on only the fall and winter seasons. The Lions won four Championships out of the seven SPC sports they competed in: Cross Country, Basketball, Soccer, and Swimming. They also finished second in volleyball, third in wrestling, and sixth in football. These victories came even as St. Mark’s grappled with a tornado in October 2019 that destroyed or severely damaged much of its athletic facilities. Nevertheless, Lions continued to display leadership, camaraderie, and positivity both on and off the field.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the way our student-athletes and coaches responded to all of the unprecedented challenges from this past year,” Mr. Lissemore said. “One thing is for sure: the resilience and character displayed by these student-athletes will be an inspiration to future Marksmen for many years to come.”
