Physical education and athletics are important components of the overall school curriculum. They strive to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes through application of the concepts and principles of human movement and participation in competitive sports.
As with other disciplines, physical education and athletics seek to prepare individuals to live effectively in the modern world. When one can develop his physical potential, he experiences the joy and exhilaration of a functionally efficient body. In addition and equally important to fitness are the intellectual, social, cultural, and emotional understandings and responsibilities that are developed through sports.
The goals for the program include the development of improved health, physical fitness, and movement skills, specialized knowledge of and appreciation for sports, self-understanding through social interaction, and appreciation of play and the use of leisure time. The program also strives to develop highly competitive teams.
Physical Education: Grades 5 & 6
Fifth and sixth graders participate in daily physical education classes where they are introduced to a wide variety of athletic activities, including but not restricted to the offerings in the Upper School. All fifth and sixth graders are to sign up for PE Grade 5 and PE Grade 6, respectively. Classes meet for 45 minutes and are directed by members of the physical education department. Lessons are structured to introduce the students to basic skills and rules involved in each sport, as well as the continued development of personal physical fitness goals.
Physical Education: Grades 7 & 8
Seventh and eighth grade P.E. classes and athletic teams meet from 3:30–4:45 p.m., five days per week. Students are required to participate daily and are allowed several options each season. Because of the nature of competitive sports, the time commitment and fitness expectations are varied and demanding. Students should be aware of a particular sport’s time and fitness requirements before signing up. Coaches are happy to answer questions. Students should choose a sport for each season from the following list:
Fall PE - 7/8 Cross Country - 7/8 Fencing - 7/8 Football - 7* Football - 8* Volleyball 7/8* Water Polo - 7/8 (starting 2022-23) |

Due to limited coaching staff and facilities, a place cannot be guaranteed in all interscholastic sports.
PE Tutorial: Grades 7 & 8
The tutorial program is offered for the middle school student-athlete whose interest, dedication and commitment to a particular sport are such that he would be actively practicing and competing year-round, regardless of St. Mark’s Physical Education and Athletic requirements. It is not intended for the student experimenting with a sport for the first time, or the student who is not actively competing for St. Mark’s in the specific activity for which the tutorial is offered. All tutorial applications will be evaluated by a committee who have the complete discretion to approve or deny any applicant’s acceptance into the tutorial program. Acceptance into this program will be determined by many factors including the quantity and quality of an applicant’s weekly time commitment to their sport, as clearly reflected by a schedule that meets or exceeds the high standards set forth for St. Mark’s athletes. This program is strictly reserved for middle school student-athletes who exemplify a high level of commitment to their respective sport, and prior history will also be a significant factor in determining the acceptance of this application.
