Journalists Hard at Work

While the St. Mark’s campus is fairly quiet over the summer months, the journalism suite is always buzzing with activity. Throughout the summer, students have been hard at work on the 2017–2018 editions of the Marksmen yearbook and The ReMarker student newspaper.

“The summer months offer a unique time period for the staff to get in and do a lot of the critical work for the yearbook before the busy school year,” said incoming yearbook editor Omar Rana ’18. “Without summer preparation, I don't think it would be possible for us to maintain our high quality work because we are all so busy during the year.

Beginning work even before the release of the last yearbook, the new staff for the 2018 Marksmen brainstorm ideas, color options, and theme phrases, all preparing for the St. Mark’s workshop, held at the end of August with seven other schools.

Meanwhile, the newspaper staff also worked on a redesign, finishing a complete overhaul of the entire publication to make it more content driven.

“It’s vital that we get work done over the summer so we can begin with coverage in the fall,” ReMarker editor Kobe Roseman ’18 said. “One of the main focuses this year is to have an understated feel to the complexity behind the design. It’s been a real privilege to have the ability to spark positive conversation on campus.”

Over the summer, The Remarker also took six staff members to the Columbia Scholastic Press Association workshop at Columbia in New York. After beginning the redesign in of the paper, they returned to Dallas, finalizing the redesign a few days later. In addition to the New York trip, The Remarker staff also holds a design workshop throughout the first week of August.

"I was totally impressed with the new look that readers will see in our publications,” said Ray Westbrook, Gene and Alice Oltrogge Master Teaching Chair and the faculty advisor to The ReMarker and Marksmen. “And I couldn’t be more proud of the diligence, talents, and commitment to excellence this group has shown all summer in their efforts.”
