By serving as writers, producers, directors, editors, and cinematographers, boys learn what it takes to transform an idea into a fully produced movie.
Middle School students begin to develop their understanding of film language and get a survey of the many different aspects of media creation. Working in small groups, they put their newfound knowledge into practice by creating projects that involve photography, audio, and short films. Students learn and hone both creative and practical skills as they learn to write, produce, organize, film, and edit projects.
Upper School students form a 'writer's room' and collectively compose various works, including comedic and dramatic short films and an original half-hour sitcom pilot.
Honors Film students take these skills a step further, pitching ideas for short films that are reviewed by entertainment industry professionals, who then select two projects to be flagship shorts for St. Mark’s film program. The Honors Film students write, produce, direct, and crew these films. Throughout this process, boys dive deeper into some of the core elements of filmmaking, including screenwriting, cinematography, editing, acting for the screen and directing. At the end of the year, student work is celebrated at the annual St. Mark’s Student Film Showcase.
Students interested in community service through film are encouraged to join the Lionheart Club, where students create public service announcements for local non-profit organizations.
Spotlight: Student Film Showcase
At the conclusion of each school year, St. Mark’s Film Studies program rolls out the red carpet for the Student Film Showcase. Last year, the Showcase was held at the historic Texas Theatre, where dozens of students, parents, friends, and teachers came together to screen short films, present awards, and engage in panel discussions with the student filmmakers.
