Chapel Council provides strong leadership, direction

Chapel Council members have had a busy year of activities, providing many initiatives for Marksmen to have meaningful discussions and experiences in the world of religion and spirituality.

A wide range of activities kept the School community engaged this year:

Interfaith visits:
  • A local ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
  • Buddhist (Thai) Temple of Dallas
  • Karya Siddhi Hanuman Temple
  • The DFW Diwali Mela
  • The Inter-Tribal Council’s North Texas Powwow
  • The Islamic Center of Irving

Interfaith guests to St. Mark’s included:

  • A leader of the Jain community
  • A leader of the local Zen Buddhist community
  • A seminarian from Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church
  • A rabbi from Temple Emanu-El

Interfaith round table discussions were held on topics such as:
  • What is hardest about being part of the religious community with which you identify?
  • What is religion’s role in your life?
  • Why is there anything rather than nothing?

“Diversity of opinion and spiritual practice makes our world both marvelously rich and frustratingly complex,” said Rev. Stephen Arbogast, school chaplain. “Here in North Texas, we can see the intersection of religion and culture right in front of us — it is everywhere around us. ‘They’ are ‘us.’”

For the first time this year, Upper School Chapel Council members joined with their counterparts in Lower School in a joint cross-divisional community service project, preparing snack bags for the Austin Street Center.

Additionally, members were instrumental in leading a special Grandparents’ Day service; provided Chapel talks, led hymns in various Chapel services and assisted with the St. Francis Day Blessing of the Animals.
