Soccer
Looking to recover their winning form, the varsity soccer team traveled to nearby rival ESD. The match was lively from the opening whistle with both teams set to attack with the Lions beginning to press the Eagles’ goal. Against the run of play, the Eagles scored in the 19th minute when a St. Mark’s defender inadvertently flicked the ball into the path of an onrushing ESD striker giving the Lion goalkeeper little chance to make a save. The Lions showed a great deal of resolve and their persistence was rewarded in the 69th minute. Perched at the far post, senior Colin Campbell coolly chested junior Knobel Hunt’s cross to his feet, evaded a would-be defender, and then cleverly slotted the ball past an onrushing goalkeeper. Unfortunately, the score remained level for less than three minutes before St. Mark’s gifted ESD the lead with a defensive miscue. The Eagles tightened on defense, leaving the Lions little opportunity for an equalizer. On Friday, the Lions traveled to Hockaday to play Greenhill in another non-counter match where the girls and boys played simultaneously on adjacent fields. A healthy rivalry, optimal weather conditions, and a slick, natural surface made for entertaining play from both teams. The Hornets and Lions created opportunities to score, but neither could convert, leading to a scoreless halftime. Offensive forays from juniors Knobel Hunt and Christian Shadle created an opportunity for their classmate, Henry McElhaney, to penetrate the Greenhill defense with a 54th-minute goal. A seemingly innocuous foul at the edge of the penalty area produced a penalty kick for the Lions in the 69th minute. Hunt coolly and emphatically struck his penalty kick, giving the Hornet net-minder no chance, and the Lions doubled their lead. A frantic finish saw the Lions fend off the Hornets and earn their first shutout of the season while ending a four-game losing streak. Sophomore Noah Soliz had a standout performance, along with excellent defensive play from seniors Billy Lockhart, Alex Piccagli, Benjamin Hao, and Christian Duessel.

Swim
The varsity swim team faced Cistercian on Tuesday and did a great job. The Lions posted some great times and won 8 out of the 11 events. The team also showed great camaraderie and support for each other. The final score was St. Mark’s 116 - Cistercian 51. The swimmers will compete again on January 9 at Southlake Carroll with the races beginning at 6:30 pm.

Basketball
This past week, the varsity basketball team won its lone game, a home contest against the Anglican Church Grammar School, an all-boys school about twice the size of St. Mark’s from Brisbane, Australia. This biannual tradition over the course the last decade has afforded Marksman families a fun and fulfilling cross-cultural experience as hosts for Churchie players. And, on the court, the action has been very uptempo and competitive over the years. With college coaches representing various ACC and Big 10 schools on-hand to get a closer look at St. Mark’s recruits, the Lions jumped out to a fast start. Sophomore Colin Smith notched 18 first-half points that included back-to-back-to-back 3-point makes, and senior Andrew Laczkowski also scored 15 of his game-high 20 in the first half (along with 3 assists, 3 steals, & 3 blocks) to give the home team a 54-29 lead at the break. Junior Harrison Ingram finished the game with a very robust stat line - 14 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 5 steals - and sophomores Corvin Oprea and Caleb Vanzant turned in extremely efficient efforts (18 combined points on only 10 shot attempts), as the Lions cruised to a 93-56 victory. This week, St. Mark’s hosts TACA on Thursday night at 7:30 pm in Spencer Gym and then plays one of the area’s most dominant programs in recent years, Lancaster High School, at Hockaday on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Wrestling
The varsity wrestling team wrestled a dual against Jesuit College Preparatory School on December 10, and won 52 to 12. St. Mark’s was victorious in all the matches wrestled, winning seven by way of pin. The Lions forfeited two weight classes, the light and heavy weight categories. The wrestling team and Coach Reyno are still seeking Marksmen with interest in wrestling either the light or heavy weight categories as they would love to have a full squad. This past weekend, the Lions wrestled at the Bishop Lynch Tri-State Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, December 14. Overall, St. Mark’s took 5th out of 10 teams, which was good for a team wrestling only ten out of the fourteen weight classes in the Varsity Division. In this tough tournament, the Lions placed wrestlers in the top 4 in eight out of eleven place winners at the Varsity level. Of note, in the 126lbs weight class Jedidiah Kim and Hayward Metcalf placed runner-up and third, respectively.

Varsity:
  • 106lbs: Varun Trivedi won 2nd Place
  • 126lbs: Jedidiah Kim won 2nd Place
  • 126lbs: Hayward Metcalf won 3rd Place
  • 132lbs: Sal Abbasi won 3rd Place
  • 145lbs: Cooper Ribman won 2nd Place
  • 152lbs: Enoch Ellis won 3rd
  • 182lbs: Drew Woodward won 4th Place
  • 195lbs: Elijah Ellis won 3rd Place
This Friday and Saturday, December 20-21, St. Mark’s hosts and wrestles in the 51st St. Mark’s Lonestar Christmas Open. All former wrestlers are invited to the Championship Round to hand out championship medals.
